FIND YOUR WAY BACK

I spent much of my childhood feeling out of place and misunderstood. It felt as if I was born into the wrong family, country and continent. Upon finishing high school at the age of 18, I knew university wasn’t an option due to my mother’s financial limitations. Therefore, when the opportunity arose for me to relocate to Tanzania, I jumped at it. After writing my final A level exams in November 2014, I was on a flight to Tanzania by January 2015, and I never looked back. I spent the following six years running away from myself. Following my relocation to South Africa, I moved to London, and in between my moves, I travelled extensively around the world. Nonetheless, I have only been to Zimbabwe a handful of times, not by choice. The trauma I experienced as a Zimbabwean, and the way the country was run, made it hard for me to separate the two. The act of abandoning my nationality also automatically meant leaving the continent. I thought my trauma/suffering did not happen if I did not go back.
